For many of us, that means it’s time to begin searching for those perfect gifts for our family and friends. Unfortunately, it also means we have to take extra care in protecting our homes from housebreaks, which are a particular problem at this most festive time of year. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, housebreaks are common during the holidays for two reasons: Thieves recognize that people go out shopping or visiting for long periods of time, leaving their homes unattended. Thieves know there are valuable holiday gifts sitting on display in your home. In addition to taking standard, year-round security measures like employing deadbolt locks and a burglar alarm system, you should take some other anti-theft precautions during the holidays so you don’t advertise your house as a particularly good place for thieves to “shop”: Be extra careful to lock your windows and doors, even if you are just running out for a few minutes. Taking those extra few minutes to lock up your home could save you the stress and money of replacing your valuables. If you are going out for the evening, keep outdoor and indoor lights on and turn on a television or radio to make it look and sound like someone is at home. After those shopping trips, don’t leave packages or wrapped gifts near windows where they can be seen from outside. Don’t hide valuable gifts in your garage, since garage locks are generally not as strong as house locks. Instead, store presents out of view in a closet or an attic. Break up boxes and place them in trash bags before bringing them to the curb for disposal. Don’t leave holiday packages in view inside your car. Put them in your trunk. In case a theft does occur, it’s wise to keep receipts from holiday purchases in a safe place and separate from the gifts. You’ll then have the receipts as a document when filing a claim.
