Protect Your Home From Water Damage Losses

Water damage accounts for $11 billion in
homeowners’ insurance claims each year.
In 2007, California had close to 60,000
homeowners’ claims, many of them
water related. Did you know?
- The average cost of damage caused by a broken washing machine hose is $6,000?
- The average cost of damage caused by a leaky toilet ranges from $2,000 to $10,000? And in serious losses, damages can cost $25,000?
Although homeowner water damage is very common, it is also one of the most preventable. Here is a checklist we recommend all homeowners follow:
- Check the hoses going into the washing machine every six months. Look for signs of fraying or rust around the coupling.
- Turn off the washing machine supply valves when you go on vacation.
- Never leave the washing machine on when you go out.
- Inspect the pipes under your sinks for condensation or corrosion.
- Stains on ceilings or walls can be a sign of leaky plumbing behind the walls. Have the source identified immediately.
- Call a plumber immediately if you detect rust in tap water, or if you detect cracked or warped flooring.
- Be on the lookout for big changes in your water bill. If you notice a significant increase, it can be the first indication of a costly leak.
- Inspect your water heater once a year. The typical unit lasts 10 – 12 years. If you see signs of corrosion or leaks, call a plumber.
- Find the water shut-off valve outside your house and mark it so the water can be shut off quickly in an emergency.
Following this checklist will help prevent a loss, which will save you the expense of paying your deductible and amounts over your limit. It will also save you the inconvenience of submitting a claim followed by having to replace walls, ceilings, and flooring due to water damage and mold.
